HBO Globes Party Gets Golden Look

Beverly Hilton Hotel, Griff’s restaurant and poolside

When all was said and done, HBO was just one Golden Globe behind ABC to be the most honored television network (it had three, to ABC’s four)—and the 700 guests of the network had plenty to celebrate at its after-party poolside at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

HBO vice president of special events Eileen Rivard worked with designer Billy Butchkavitz to create a masculine look for the party, with golden and bronze colors dominating the palette. Faux bronze reliefs covered the venue’s existing columns, and reproductions of 1930’s furnishings and art decked the space. And although the Golden Globes ceremony is a quintessential Los Angeles event, HBO’s party had one decidedly New York touch: Butchkavitz designed metal sculptures—ranging from eight to 16 feet tall—modeled after Rockefeller Center’s Atlas sculpture, and commissioned Set Masters to build them. Butchkavitz described the look as “an environment with a sophisticated, sleek, sexy edge … modernist with touches of surrealism.” A hearty, 1930’s-inspired menu that included beef Wellington, lamb chops, oysters Rockefeller, and Waldorf salad played up the Deco mood.

To accommodate all the guests, Butchkavitz covered half of the hotel’s pool with a temporary sub-floor to increase the venue’s capacity. The other half of the pool featured a floating fire pit, a metal structure with a 10-foot ring of fire burning on top. The piece proved to be a dramatic backdrop for the celebrity photos that flooded the wire hours after the party.

Fabrics in shades of gold and bronze jacquard, faux golden fox fur, and gold and bronze leather covered the tabletops and chairs, supplied by Town & Country Event Rentals. (“The hotel is always so busy with all the Golden Globes events, so I need a backup outside the hotel for rentals,” Butchkavitz said.) More fabrics covered a 600-foot expanse of walls around the space, including blanketing on the doors and windows surrounding the pool. (Each year, HBO rents the block of rooms that surround the pool so the event doesn’t intrude on guests—and so the event producers have plenty of room to set up.)
